SERVING CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
Your Child’s Place and Recreation Station are providing a valuable service to children and parents in the vicinity of Washington, PA. The two facilities that share a single building were developed and are being operated by United Cerebral Palsy of Southwestern Pennsylvania. The design by Valentour English Bodnar & Howell, Registered Architects provides a colorful and themed environment for the children.
Your Child’s Place, a daycare for medically fragile children, is a facility rich with bright, soothing colors, where children with complex medical problems will be cared for at in a daycare environment. With the special users of the facility in mind, the VEBH design integrates play areas with a medical infrastructure. Your Child’s Place is licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and is staffed with registered nurses and other trained medical professionals. It serves infants and young children from six weeks to twelve years old.
Your Child’s Place was only the fourth facility of its kind to open in the State of Pennsylvania.
Sharing space under the same roof as Your Child’s Place is Recreation Station, an innovative creative play center. Recreation Station serves children and parents of diverse backgrounds and interests. It was designed to be totally accessible, including for children with disabilities. The design focused on a ‘Main Street’ theme with multiple play stations and rooms for painting, music, reading and other interests.
Colorful and patterned flooring, wall murals and various ‘play stations’ underline the central theme.
Your Child’s Place and Recreation Station were created through the renovation of a former ice cream manufacturing and storage plant on North Avenue in Washington. A dramatic transformation of the building occurred during construction from the abandoned plant and its offices to the new childcare facility.
Comforting features such as radiant heating in the floors was included in the facility’s design. (back)
