WILLIAM F. ENGLISH 2003 - 2011
VEBH Architects is saddened to announce the death of William F. English, AIA. Mr. English died at St. Clair Hospital on March 31.
He was a dedicated and skilled architect who served the needs of many clients over his 40 years of professional service.
Mr. English joined the firm in 1958 after graduating from Carnegie Tech, now Carnegie Mellon University. He was the architect for a wide range of projects for the firm’s healthcare, educational and public building clients. He was the president of the firm from 1993 until his retirement in 1998.
His designs included major new buildings on the University of Pittsburgh campus that were constructed during the 1970’s, including the Law Building (Barco Law Building) and the 14-story Chemistry Building (Chevron Science Center). The Chemistry Building received honors from R&D Magazine in 1975 as one of the best new laboratory buildings in the country.
The firm bore Mr. English’s name starting in 1979 as Valentour English & Associates; in 1987, it became Valentour English Bodnar. From 1997 through 2009, the firm was Valentour English Bodnar & Howell, Registered Architects.
Mr. English was active with the local architectural and building community, serving on the Board of Directors of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Pittsburgh Builders Exchange and was the first architect to ever serve as the PBE Board president in 1992.
Mr. English is survived by his wife Darlene and four children; Donna, David, Ron, and Sue; and six grandchildren.
